Volunteers needed for sports weekend
Summer is almost here and in the blink of an eye it will be time for the first annual Dover Bay Weekend Sports Festival.
The event, which will take place Aug. 4 and 5, is going to be a fun-filled weekend complete with events for every age and athletic ability. Events include an Olympic triathlon and duathlon, sprint triathlon, tri - it triathlon, kids' triathlon, the Long Bridge Swim and a 5K/10K run and walk. The proceeds from the 5K/10K run and walk benefit Sandpoint's Community Cancer Services.
CCS provides support for local cancer patients and their families through a variety of services. It opened in October 2003 and was founded by the late Heather Gibson, a champion of cancer patients everywhere.
"This event fits perfectly into our mission here at CCS," said CCS Board President Patty Hutchens. "It shows the community coming together and helping to support their neighbors who are fighting the battle of a lifetime."
Hutchens said that the event is in need of volunteers for the weekend festivities. AA Sports, the organizer of the event, has agreed to donate $10 to CCS for each volunteer.
"It is a great way to donate to CCS without opening up your wallet," said Hutchens. "Plus it promises to be a great time with all of the activities that are planned."
A sampling of some of the areas in which volunteers are needed include set up and teardown of starting and finish line equipment, pre-registration, day of race registration, finish line aid station, finisher medal distribution, timing support, course monitors, transition security and water safety for the triathlon.
It promises to be a fun filled two days. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Lisa Porter or Stephanie Moss at Community Cancer Services, 255-2301. You can also learn more about the events and register online at www.racecenter.com/doverbay.
