Thanks for the tour down memory lane

Thanks to Bob Gunter, a group of former students visited the old Sandpoint High School building recently … talk about deja vu. This building is filled with so many memories. The Scotts are doing a great job of making it into, once again, a "working" structure.

The circular track above the gymnasium brought back memories of the many hours I had spent running around and around. This was a favorite spot when I was running track back in the 1950s.

Seeing many of the old classrooms, now dressed up as offices, brought back thoughts of the many fine teachers who presided over these rooms … Mrs. Annie Brunsell, who made me sweat over algebra and geometry; Mrs. Mary Parker, who helped me learn correct English; and Mrs. Lois Hickey, who taught me some history. There were many more, but these stick in my memory.

The auditorium, where we held our school gatherings and pep rallies; is getting a major face lift. From the carved decorations on the walls to the stage at the front of this great room, it all looks brand new. It is hard to visualize this as a place that was once filled with hundreds of yelling high school students.

One can still remember the dozens of plays, talent shows and operettas that were performed by nervous, would-be actors and actresses on this stage before parents, teachers and fellow classmates.

My wife, Shirley, located the spot that once held her metal locker. Other former students could tell stories about this old structure and the fun they had here.

My dad, Dr. Neal Wendle, graduated with the first class in 1927. I graduated in 1953. We have many family memories about this beautiful old building.

Thank you, Bob, for arranging this tour. It was great.
