Sandpoint holds off Kellogg to claim win
SANDPOINT — Spencer Swerin notched his second consecutive double-double, and Sandpoint built an early double-digit lead and then held off Kellogg for a 62-48 non-league win Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.
Swerin scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and point guard Tanner French stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, eight assists and six steals to lead Sandpoint (2-0).
"In the first half we jumped out on them and led by 21 at one point," said Sandpoint coach Lance Bruce. "A lot of it was getting pressure, getting steals and fast break points."
Ryan Armbruster added 12, and Kyle Gibson 11 as the Bulldogs continue to spread the wealth offensively. Bruce was especially pleased with the play of French, who's gaining confidence in his first year running the show.
"He was much more poised than the first game," Bruce said. "He controlled the tempo and made good decisions."
Senior guard Jonathon Fuller scored a game-high 20 points on a variety of pull-up jumpers, Jeremiah Big Spring added eight, and Kenny Stuart scored seven to go along with eight rebounds to lead Kellogg (0-1). Wildcat coach Kieth Finkbeiner loved how his team never gave up, at one point closing a big deficit to six with three minutes left, as well as the play of Fuller.
"We want him to look to be a shooter," he said. "He hit some big shots tonight."
Sandpoint plays at West Valley on Saturday.
