Tunnel proposal doesn't help anyone

| October 3, 2007 9:00 PM

As an aerospace engineer, I am uniquely qualified to resolve the byway problem as I can ignore the will of the people of Sandpoint as have others but with a college degree.

To solve the "find another route" faction, let those supporters be the ones to visit the people who will lose their houses or have to live in a much modified neighborhood and tell them, "It is for the good of the people. You are saving the mud flats."

For the Steve Potter tunnel people, most tunnels under flat land are not bored but cut and filled as in Boston so you can also tell the people who will lose their land or have it forever modified, "It is for the good of the people. You are saving the mud flats."

As for Mr. Potter's arguments as to cost, have you ever seen a project such as he is advocating meet budget? What about the ancient Indian burial grounds that will be discovered and hold up the project not to even think about the possible biohazards and trees that will be destroyed.

Ah, but there is a solution. Let's put a tunnel right down the middle of the Sand Creek mud flats and then Steve Potter will not have to write any more letters to the editor.
