Abu Ghraib comparison misses mark

| October 20, 2007 9:00 PM

This is in response to a flier being posted in our community by the United Methodist Church in Bonners Ferry. Sponsors include St. Ann's Catholic Church, Boundary County Human Rights Task Force and Boundary County peace group.

The flier entitled "Ghosts of Abu Ghraib" describes a documentary to be shown about "the nature of United States sponsored torture." To be fair, they also should show a documentary describing "the nature of terrorist-sponsored torture," the various horrendous torture terrorists commit on innocent people, beheadings, women and children used as human shields and indoctrination of children to become suicide bombers.

If their flier was posted somewhere in a terrorist-sponsored country they would be arrested, horribly tortured and/or executed.

The Abu Ghraib incident in no way compares to the atrocities terrorists perpetrate. The Abu Graib incident was nothing to be proud of no one was murdered, were they? It's disgraceful to denigrate our military for this one occurrence.

We have the finest military in the world, putting their lives on the line every day protecting our country and our freedom. We have friends who have a son in Aghanistan. They are very upset by this flier. You don't seem to understand we are at war with people who want to murder us — all in the name of their so-called religion.

There is a reason we haven't had another attack since 9/11. Remember, we are the land of the free because of the brave.
