Hellar more willing to consider dog parks

| October 24, 2007 9:00 PM

I was impressed by the long list of accomplishments attributed to Mayor Ray Miller in his campaign ad of Oct. 19. Many of these so-called accomplishments resulted from City Council decisions, some of which passed despite the mayor's opposition. Notably absent from the list was the mayor's successful opposition to the establishment of a dog park on Sandpoint public land. During the Parks and Recreation Commission consideration of a dog park, Miller made it clear that he opposed the idea. Naturally, the motion failed to go to the City Council.

Sandpoint has a reputation of being unfriendly to dogs. "No dogs" signs are pervasive in the parks where dogs are prohibited even when on a leash. Other cities have benefited from the establishment of fenced dog parks which provide plastic bags for dog owners to clean up after their pets.

The mayor's opposition, candidate Gretchen Hellar, has indicated that, if elected, she would give serious consideration to policies more friendly to dogs. I urge all registered dogs, their owners and canine friends to vote for Gretchen.
