Craig held himself above nation's laws

| September 1, 2007 9:00 PM

The discussions about Sen. Larry Craig's recent actions are covering the wrong topic. It is known that the American people do not care if their senators break the law — just look at Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who kept office after driving drunk and crashing, a violation of the law that also put individuals at risk, unlike Craig's actions.

But separate from breaking the law, can we accept a senator who attempts to use his position and the power that we, the people of Idaho, have given him to get away with breaking the law? In the police report, for the crime that Craig pled guilty to, it states: the senator presented a business card and asked, "What do you think about that?"

The fact that Senator Craig tried to abuse his power to get away with breaking the law shows that he is unfit for that power. That is the debate we should be having. Do you feel that it is OK for a senator to use his position to hold himself above the law? If you do, then support him, but if you feel that everyone should be treated the same by the law, then Sen. Craig needs to go. Period. Never mind anything else. Are we all equal under the law, or are some of us exempt from the law? Larry Craig felt his position should exempt him, do you?
