Heavy-handed officer railroaded senator

| September 1, 2007 9:00 PM

I am a former resident of Sandpoint. I have very rarely supported the positions of Sen. Larry Craig, however, that doesn't mean that I believe he deserves to be treated like he is in this current situation involving his arrest in Minneapolis.

I listened to the actual voice recording of his interrogation and arrest online. The first thing that came to mind was the disrespectful way the arresting cop treated a sitting U.S. senator. This cop hounded and pressured Sen. Craig until he finally pleaded guilty. I really believe that he is being railroaded on this.

I am sick and tired of the way many in law enforcement are acting today. Many of these people act like they are judge and jury along with being a cop. Have you noticed the way cops have become so militaristic. They didn't act like that when I was younger. Perhaps cops need to realize that they are only able to treat the public in a way the public will allow. When they cross that line, the public will react. I for one see the Craig arrest as an abusive cop trying to make a name for himself.

I am not for lawless society, but when my country has more people imprisoned than any other country, perhaps its time to evaluate the power of law enforcement and reign it in. When people finally have had enough, you won't be able to control us, or police us, take note! Again, even though I'm not a political supporter of Sen. Craig, it would be a shame for him to resign, and another step toward fascism and a police state.
