Sandpoint VB team down CV

| September 18, 2007 9:00 PM

SPOKANE — In what head coach Karen Alsager called her team's best performance of the season, Sandpoint downed Greater Spokane League foe Central Valley 25-21, 26-28, 25-16 and 25-7 in non-league volleyball action Monday night in Spokane.

Abby Helander had a monster game, posting 32 digs to go along with six aces. She served 13 jump serves in the one-sided fourth game, which Alsager said demoralized the Bears.

"Abby played out of her head; she was amazing," said Alsager, adding it felt really good to go over and beat a Washington team. "It was a fabulous match. The girls were loud and energetic, in the face of the other team."

Koko James tallied 28 set assists and 15 digs, Linnia Hawkins had 17 assists, Piper Wahlin hammered home 19 kills and Kaiti Lunde added nine as the Bulldogs (5-0) got big contributions from numerous players.

Sandpoint hosted Post Falls last night in IEL action, but the Daily Bee's early deadline prevented a story. See Thursday's Bee for all of the results.

? JV posts win over Central Valley

Blake Plaster, Emilie Kuster, Austin Pardue and Alisa Millard had strong games to help lead the Sandpoint JV volleyball team past Central Valley 25-19, 15-25 and 15-6 Monday night in Spokane. The freshman team also posted a win, giving the Bulldogs a sweep of the Bears.

? Sandpoint girls soccer team falls to Lewis and Clark

SPOKANE — Two very late goals cost Sandpoint the win as Lewis and Clark scored twice in the final three minutes of the game to beat the Bulldogs 2-1 in non-league action Tuesday afternoon in Spokane.

After a scoreless first half, Sandpoint (7-4-1) got on the board in the 65th minute when Annie Vogel finished a nice pass from Brittany Clawson for a 1-0 lead.

"It was a nice change in direction," said Bulldogs coach Adam Tajan of the goal. "They switched the point of attack and Annie buried a nice cross."

Tajan said his team played on their heels in the second half and had trouble linking passes. It looked like they might register their first win against a GSL team, but Lewis and Clark scored in the 79th minute, then added another goal after the referee awarded four minutes of extra time.

Sandpoint plays on the road against the reigning 5A state champion Vikings on Thursday, looking to earn a split of the IEL season series.

First half — none. Second half — 1, Spt, Annie Vogel (Brittany Clawson) 65:00. 2, LC, Annie Pokorny 79:00. 3, LC, Taylor Strawson 80:00.
