Sandpoint, Lake City end in tie

| September 25, 2007 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint had countless chances to put the game away, but a free kick by Lake City's Ciara Kremer in the 64th minute was the equalizer of a 1-1 tie in IEL girls soccer action Tuesday night under a full moon at War Memorial Field.

Bailey Hewitt scored her 15th goal of the season to give Sandpoint (8-5-2, 6-2-1 IEL) a 1-0 lead early in the game. Hewitt was the recipient of a beautiful feed from Brittany Oakley, who dribbled past two defenders, beat the keeper, and fed Hewitt for the empty net tap in.

Sandpoint had numerous chances to increase its lead, but Lake City hung around on the strength of some solid goal keeping by Shannon Fraser, who stopped numerous point blank chances.

"I thought we controlled the majority of game," said Sandpoint coach Adam Tajan, whose team out-shot Lake City 18-5. "We hit the post, got one on one with their keeper and created lots of chances. Sometimes you just can't hit the back of the net."

Lake City (7-2-3, 5-1-2) capitalized on Kremer's free kick after she was taken down from behind about 20 yards from the goal. She bent a hard drive, which ricocheted off the Sandpoint wall and past Bulldog keeper Kelsey Windju into the upper corner of the net.

"The first half Sandpoint took us and in the second we changed the way the game was played," said Lake City coach Matt Ruchti. "Our only loss in league was to them (Sandpoint) and that doesn't sit well with the team."

Sandpoint is at Moscow on Thursday.
