Vote only way to fund capital improvements
Earlier this year, a group of concerned citizens conducted a thorough review of our local schools. They found all the school buildings in the district have safety and deferred maintenance issues. Most need heating and wiring improvements. Two schools cannot adequately house the students they are meant to service. They approached the district's school board and presented their findings. They showed that putting off deferred maintenance needs, and putting out “fires” as they arise, actually moves funds away from educational needs. They recommended that the school board present a special plant facilities levy to the community.
The levy would provide funds for district-wide improvements, address health, safety and deferred maintenance needs at every school, construct additional classrooms at Sagle School, and complete Kootenai Elementary School. After much review, the school board agreed that these situations need to be addressed. On May 20, each voter will get to either agree or disagree with them. Be informed. Come to the open house at Kootenai Elementary School, 301 Sprague Ave., Kootenai, on April 18 from 4-6:30 p.m.
Remember: this is a facilities levy. A community vote is the only way to fund capital investments in the schools. The state gives no money towards this end. As a community we have not supported capital improvements to our schools since 1987. Our facilities are limping along. The buildings in which we choose to educate our children and grandchildren are not someone else's responsibility. Vote responsibly.
