| April 16, 2008 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint’s Abby Helander and Jess Lindenberg continued their torrid play this season, posting straight set wins over Clark Fork’s Chelsea Macumber and Shaina Gustafson Wednesday as the two teams scrimmaged at Travers Park. Helander beat Macumber 6-4, 6-2, and Lindenberg downed Gustafson 6-2, 6-2.

“They’ve been so consistent this year,” said head coach Jane Rockwell of the duo. “Jess has turned her game around, she’s much more consistent. Abby’s backhand is on fire right now.”

Clark Fork’s Thomas McMahon beat Dustin Pierce 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 boys singles, and Sandpoint’s Mikka Nostdahl played arguably his best match of the season, dropping Mike Martin 6-2, 6-2.

“Mikka mixed shots up and had a great drop shot,” said Rockwell. “He moved him (Martin) forward and back and would pass him.”

Gustafson and Macumber doubled back to beat Hailey Woodruff and Ashley Warrer 6-4, 6-1 in girls doubles. Reb Johnson and Alison Fister beat Brittny Yates and Amy Gannon 6-0, 6-3.

Sandpoint hosts Lewiston Saturday at noon, weather permitting.

? Merwin sizzles at Hawk Invitational

POST FALLS — Freshman golfer Jesse Merwin fired a 91, good for second overall, to lead the Sandpoint girls golf team to a fourth place finish out of 10 teams Wednesday at the Hawk Invitational at The Links golf course.

“It was a long course at The Links,” said head coach Jim Alsager. “She hit the ball well off the tee, didn’t get hampered by the wind and putted well.”

Both the boys and girls teams play host to the Sandpoint Invitational Monday at Stoneridge, weather permitting, of course.
