Personal responsibility also to blame in crisis

| April 21, 2008 9:00 PM

I don’t understand the doom and gloom bombarding us daily regarding the economy. I believe everything comes and goes in cycles Š the economy, the weather, hairstyles, etc. The present slowdown, recession, downturn, whatever you wish to call it, is being laid at the feet of the current administration, the mortgage bankers, or the catchall, corporate greed.

Am I dead wrong in placing some blame on people who bought houses they couldn’t afford? Where is the greedy buyers’ accountability? Corporate greed? I’ll venture a guess that those of us who beat profitable corporations to death, especially the big ones, wouldn’t utter a word if it benefits us.

Economic data indicates we have muddled through 32 economic cycles since 1854. Since 1945 we have survived 11 economic downturns. The average time to go from an economic peak, through the trough of a downturn (recession?), and back to the next peak was 67 months Š that’s five and a half years!

So tell me again it’s the president’s fault. The economy is driven by the market Š you and me. We all want, with no accountability. We are blessed with material possessions, rights, privileges, and freedoms others would die for, but our economy will always be a roller coaster no matter the party in power.

Will I give up my pickup truck that loves gasoline in gulps in order to punish Exxon? Not a chance, but I can’t understand why my neighbor needs a Suburban.
