Delbert Edward Piatt, 100, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2008, at 1 p.m. in Coffelt Funeral Chapel with military honors. A catered potluck reception will follow at the VFW Hall until 4 p.m.

Delbert was born on Dec. 14, 1907, in Sandpoint, Idaho, the son of Martin Luther and Emma Piatt. He attended local schools and then went to work as a logger. He logged with horses, in the area that is now residential Sandpoint. He also worked on the “donkey trains’ of that era, and began his career in construction.

In World War II he served with the U.S. Navy, spending time in the Aleutians and off the coast of Alaska. After the war he followed construction, working as a heavy equipment operator. He worked throughout the Northwest, also working on the Northslope, helping put in the Alaskan Pipeline, retiring about 1980.

He was a former member of the VFW in Lewiston, Idaho, and the Operating Engineers, local No. 370, out of Spokane, Wash. He loved going to the area casinos, hunting, and fishing.

He had a great sense of humor and loved telling stories.

Delbert is survived by his daughter Arlene Orr of Lincoln, Mont.; a stepdaughter, Gloirlee Pence of Kamiah, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters, and five brothers.
