Letters of support still needed by nurses
In a letter written in support of the nurses who are negotiating with the Bonner General Hospital for a fair contract, I urged others to write to this newspaper in support, saying “your letter will help ensure you’ll have a nurse standing by your bedside.”
Data from hospital records show that the percentage of turnover of nursing staff for 2002, 2003, and 2004 was 18 percent. The percentage for the three most recent years (2005, 2006, and 2007) increased to a disturbing 36 percent. This doubling suggests that the hospital will need to effectively recruit and retain qualified nurses in the future.
This task will most likely become more difficult, given the nationwide shortage of nurses, increases in the cost of living, and the lack of affordable housing in Sandpoint. Therefore, the hospital administration would be wise to offer a contract that includes competitive salaries, an attractive benefits package, and job security.
These are all aspects of the current negotiations, and all are crucial to ensure that the hospital can hire and retain enough licensed nurses to be there to care for you should you be hospitalized. Your letters of support are still needed and are greatly appreciated.
