Winfield “Winnie” Charles West, Jr

Winfield “Winnie” Charles West, Jr. died April 23, 2008, in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Winnie was born Feb. 17, 1945, in Sandpoint. Graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, at Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Winnie graduated from Sandpoint High School and attended the University of Idaho where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Winnie enjoyed playing all sports and excelled at most. In junior high he won the Idaho State Hoop Shoot for two consecutive years and in his senior year he was awarded the Sandpoint High School Best All Around Athlete trophy.

Winnie grew up pitching in the American Legion baseball leagues and earned starting positions on his high school basketball teams. He spent hours on Lake Pend Oreille swimming and perfecting his water skiing.

Winnie was a gentle person with a kind heart and friendly spirit. His favorite pastime was walking and visiting with those he met on his walks.

Winnie was preceded in death by his parents, Winfield and Thelma Rhoads West. He is survived by his two sisters and their spouses, Irene and Richard Gaskins of Media, Pa., and Pat and John Travis of Boise, Idaho. Three nephews and one niece of whom he was enormously proud and always asked for stories of their activities and accomplishments also survive him.
