Share your garden's fruits with the less fortunate

| August 16, 2008 9:00 PM

It is August, the month of summer harvests, and many of our gardens are bursting with more vegetables, berries, and fruits than we can consume, can or freeze.  Please do not let these precious food items go to waste.

High produce prices have more people than ever unable to afford basic good nutrition. You can help, by simply harvesting your gardens and orchards and delivering them to the nearest food bank. The food will be immediately distributed to individuals and families in need, and the donation is tax-deductible as a charitable contribution.

Even a few pounds of produce can make a big difference. A box of apples can feed many people. Onions, potatoes, winter squash and carrots keep well and are especially valuable as fall approaches. Summer veggies and berries are always a welcome treat. Please join the U of I Bonner County Master Gardeners in helping the local food banks do their job of feeding hungry people.

Some places to donate:

n Bonner Community Food Center, 921 N. Fifth, Sandpoint, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

n West Bonner County Food Bank, 103 N. Washington, Oldtown, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to noon.

n Clark Fork Food Bank at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Clark Fork on Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

We can feed our community. Thanks to all who have donated extra produce, and thanks to all who will begin to do so. It is much better than letting this food we have worked to grow go to waste.
