Round the Lake 2008 on Saturday

| August 21, 2008 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Attention area cycling enthusiasts: It’s not too late to sign up for the 100-mile Round the Lake 2008 bike ride, which benefits a new program called Recycle-A-Bike.

The scenic ride starts Saturday morning  at Sandpoint Sports in Ponderay, and circles the entire perimeter of Lake Pend Oreille. Registration will take place Saturday morning at Sandpoint Sports, from 6:15-6:50 a.m., with the ride starting at 7.

The route is a combination of paved and dirt roads, with 26 miles of pavement out Hwy 200 to Clark Fork, 37 miles of dirt heading over the Monarch Ridge and along the High Drive Road to the south end of the lake. Then it’s another 32 miles of pavement as you descend toward Farragut and head back Hwy 95 to Ponderay.

Cost of the ride is only $20, and includes a shirt and lunch at the halfway point of the ride. A SAG vehicle will follow the riders and provide assistance.

Recycle-A-Bike is a non-profit organization that restores used bicycles for underprivileged children and families. It’s solely dependent on volunteers who repair donated bicycles. Proceeds from Round the Lake 2008 will help purchase parts needed to rebuild the bikes.
