Tigers take down Cats

| August 29, 2008 9:00 PM

MULLAN - Two freshman quarterbacks got a taste of varsity football on Friday as Clark Fork and Mullan both started first-year signal callers as the Tigers defeated the Wampus Cats 30-6 at John Drager Field.

Clark Fork freshman quarterback Stillman Berkley and Mullan freshman Casey McKinnon took over for mainstays at the position from the past couple of years, as both teams were hit by graduation a year ago.

McKinnon scored on runs of 24 and 11 yards at the end of the second quarter for a 14-0 halftime lead after a quiet first half.

Clark Fork opened the second half with a seven-minute drive on offense, culminating with a five-yard run from Howard Katzenberg to cut the deficit to 14-6.

Mullan would answer on their first possession of the half as McKinnon's third touchdown made it 22-6.

Clark Fork (0-1, 0-1 NSL) would hold the ball for most of the fourth quarter, but failed to punch the ball across the goal line after getting a second and goal at the one yard line. McKinnon would score on a 97 yard run for the final score, giving him 240 yards rushing for the game.

Clark Fork junior Chance Nesbitt finished with 140 tough yards on the ground to help carry the offensive load. Returning only one starter, Cats head coach Brian Arthun wasn't sure how his team would step up.

"We made too many mental mistakes," said Arthun. "Moving forward, there's lots of things to clean up."

The Cats travel to Sather Field next Friday to face Wallace.
