| December 4, 2008 8:00 PM

SPIRIT LAKE - Junior guard Derek Tymesen scored 17 points as Timberlake opened its season with its first victory since late in the 2006-07 season, 50-34 over Clark Fork in nonleague boys basketball on Thursday night.

Clark Fork senior Chase Chowning registered a double-double in the losing effort, scoring 11 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Jared Broggi added 11 points, and Pat Young scored eight to go with five steals to lead the 1A Cats (1-2), who never recovered from a sluggish start.

"We killed ourselves in the first half; came out flat and things just kind of snowballed," said Cats coach Melvin Speelmon. "We got focused in the second half and played them pretty even."

Pat Lagrimanta added 16 points for 3A Timberlake (1-0), which had lost 23 straight games.

The Wampus Cats host Priest River next Friday, their third 3A opponent in the first four games.
