Sandpoint edges Badgers in wrestling

BONNERS FERRY - Behind a huge pin by sophomore Garret Belgarde, Sandpoint edged Bonners Ferry 48-42 in wrestling action late Thursday night in Bonners Ferry.

Belgarde missed making his normal weight class at 103 pounds by just 1/10 of a pound, so Bulldogs head coach Mike Randles opted to bump him up two weight classes to 119 pounds, where he faced the Badgers Benny Watt, a rock solid wrestler. Belgarde registered a late pin, securing the pivotal win that gave the Bulldogs their first win of the season.

"He was losing 13-10 and pinned Watt with three seconds left on the clock," said Randles. "That was really the match right there."

Cliff Csizmar (112), Jacob Porter (125), Dylan Quigley (152), Leonard Fister (160) and Terry Taylor (285) also registered pins in the dual, where every point was important.

Sandpoint fell 56-24 to Libby in the other half of the dual doubleheader Thursday night. Sid Winter (140) and Fister each registered pins against Libby, but forfeits again proved costly for the somewhat inexperienced Bulldogs.

"I'm not going to put inexperienced kids on the mat against experienced kids," explained Randles. "We're basically down 24-0 before the match even starts."

Sandpoint was supposed to wrestle in the Othello Tournament today, but the event was canceled. The next meet is Tri-State in Coeur d'Alene next weekend.
