As we said last week, it's been a frustrating start for many racers as Mother Nature eliminated event after event. Try as she may, the racers prevailed this time.

n Ladies' FIS -  The Schweitzer Alpine Racing Team sent several ladies to compete at Nakiska, Alberta Dec. 12-15. This being the first FIS race of consequence in the region, it drew a strong field. The organizers were able to get three of four races off, despite wind chills below minus 40 degrees. Lindsay Anderson had her best result on the first (and coldest) day, improving her Giant Slalom points and placing 2nd amongst J2's. Later in the week she skied to a 3rd place J2 finish in Slalom. Her next competition will be at the FIS Elite Series in Park City in January.

n Men's FIS - This week Panorama, B.C. hosted a major FIS series for men which likewise drew a strong field, including members of the U.S. and Canadian national teams. Not to be outdone, these fellows faced ambient temperatures of minus 32 degrees. Thankfully, the organizer canceled competition the first day and waited until it "warmed" to minus 10 degrees. Scott Snow, in his first year of FIS competition, crashed (but finished) in two of the three races. He did, however, get to the podium with J2 Bronze in the second Giant Slalom, scoring good points. He will also be in the PNSA contingent going to Park City next month.

n Independence Junior Race Series - Time is running out to register for this fun youth event - we'll even work you in over the telephone. The first day (Friday, Jan. 2) will be a coached "learn to race" clinic followed by timed runs through the NASTAR course. The following three Friday evenings (Jan. 9, 16 and 23) will center around the race course, with some coaching on the side. The goal is having fun and making friends. A great deal at a very low price ($38), registration is limited to 80 kids, so act now! Registration forms are available at local ski shops or contact Shep Snow at 263-3552.

n Potpourri - Powder, powder, powder… the next best thing to racing. Head to Schweitzer and get some this week! Any comments, recommendations or contributions to this column may be sent to Shep Snow by e-mail at shep@thesnowschool.com

The Inside Edge runs every Thursday in the Daily Bee during ski season.
