Solutions may help us preserve retail character
Over the past few weeks media outlets have continually reminded us how poor retail sales are in Sandpoint yet they haven't offered any possible solutions to ensure we maintain our retail character.
Here is a list of possible ideas:
1. The Chamber of Commerce and the DSBA could suspend their monthly dues for three months to give struggling businesses a chance.
2. Local banks could be pro-active and offer special loans at reduced rates to local businesses only to get them through the winter.
3. Local banks could reduce monthly dues on current business loans for three months.
4. Property owners (landlords) could reduce their rent requirements for the winter. One property owner already has. He should be given the keys to the city for his proactive community-oriented gesture.
5. Verizon and Avista could reduce their rates.
6. The DSBA could pay to have all sidewalks shoveled thus helping reduce/remove another expense business owners incur.
7. Businesses could partner with each other on marketing, e-mail databases, cross selling, etc.
8. Businesses could offer local residents only 30 percent off regular priced merchandise for the next three months (not just after Christmas).
9. Businesses could establish lay-away programs (you want that Stephen Lyman print but can only afford $20 a month until things get better — no problem).
I'm sure there are other ideas and if we truly want Sandpoint to stay vibrant during these tough economic times we will need to implement some of them otherwise we will have a lot of vacant store fronts by spring.
