Education, services are needed to prevent unwanted pregnancies
The recent letter on the abortion issue provides the opportunity for another point of view, a woman’s. I agree with Steve, children are precious, although our society seems to do little about the daily exploitation, neglect and abuse of already living children. His letter implies that he has spent a great deal of time actually witnessing what takes place in a women’s clinic, or simply has been exposed to biased sources.
I have spent time listening to pregnant teens, low income women, women who already have several children and whose husbands refuse to use birth control. I have talked with women who have become pregnant due to misinformation, or no access to birth control, and unfortunately by manipulation or force.
Blaming health professionals for providing a safe place and medical support for women is ridiculous. Pregnant women seeking help are given information on adoption and encouraged to talk openly with a counselor who attempts to guide them toward other possible solutions. She is not under pressure by health care workers.
Rather than furthering the bias toward women and attempting to legislate their free will over their own bodies, let’s educate and provide services to help prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Teach our sons respect for females and personal responsibility.
Provide a nurturing and loving home for our children, while boosting their self esteem and give them the guidance and support they need while they become young adults.
Also providing birth control and health care to the low income is simply common sense.
