Prevent your dogs from chasing wildlife

| February 25, 2008 8:00 PM

Today as I looked out the window at the deep snow, I was sickened at the sight of eight deer running in panic. some went onto the highway, some into the woods.

They were being chased by a medium-sized, muscular black dog in the Wrenco area. The deer have their well-worn paths making it easy for a dog to chase them. The dog can bite the deer in the rear legs and kill them.

When I first got a dog here in North Idaho, I was told that a dog can be shot if it is chasing wildlife. I have gone to great trouble walking my dog twice a day making sure it does not chase any wild animals. I live on several acres but always keep my dog under control so the deer can be safe.

While we have such deep snow, the deer and moose can often be foundĀ  walking on the highway. We are seeing more road kill lately. In the last few weeks coming home from Sandpoint at night,I have encountered a moose (so dark at night) and deer.

Please keep your dog from running free anytime, anywhere and drive carefully, safely at night. Conditions will be improving soon.
