Bulldogs defeats Bonners Ferry in wrestling dual

| January 3, 2008 8:00 PM

PRIEST RIVER — Timmy Pepperdine and Leonard Fister each posted first period pins to help lead Sandpoint to a 51-31 win over Bonners Ferry in non-league dual action Thursday night at Priest River Lamanna High School.

Fister pinned Joe Neumayer at the end of the first period at 152 pounds, and Pepperdine pinned Joe Carpenter at 1:47 in the second round, showing the form that makes him one of the top wrestlers in the state at his weight.

"Tim wrestles at a different level," said Sandpoint head coach Kirk Hartzell of the defending 103 pound state champion, who has moved up in weight this year. "He's doing all the right things and got rewarded tonight by pounding the kid."

Hartzell was also pleased with the wrestling of Garret Belgarde, who scored a convincing win over Ben Watt at 103 pounds. Sandpoint's Jacob Porter lost 4-2 in a hard-fought match against Dustin Kohlen at 112 pounds, both wrestlers grinding on the mat as points were tough to come by. Sandpoint gained the remainder of its points via forfeit, returning to the mat after a lengthy layoff.

Bonners Ferry's Dane Swisher scored a major decision over Sid Winter at 140 pounds, and Jeremiah Solt pinned Colter Sigman at 125 pounds to lead the Badgers.

Sandpoint was wrestling Priest River at press time in the three-team dual. See tomorrow's Bee for complete results.

SANDPOINT — Sophomore guard Shawn Reid had 13 points and seven rebounds to lead a balanced effort as Post Falls built an early lead and cruised to a 65-47 win over Sandpoint in IEL action Wednesday night at Les Rogers Court.

Levi Buckles added 12 points, and Malcolm Colbert 11 as the Trojans (4-7, 2-1 IEL) used their size advantage to stifle the Bulldogs' offense and build a 34-20 team rebounding edge.

Tanner French drilled three 3-pointers among his team-high 11 points, Spencer Swerin added nine points and eight rebounds, and Ryan Armbruster scored eight points to go with five assists and four steals in the loss for Sandpoint (4-5, 0-2 IEL), which shot a disappointing 16-65 from the field.

"When everyone is shooting that poorly you hope the defensive intensity is there to keep you in the game; it wasn't," said Bulldogs coach Lance Bruce. "I take responsibility for not having the team ready."

Sandpoint is at Moscow Friday night.
