Baker leads Lake City past Sandpoint

| January 8, 2008 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Junior post Katie Baker, arguably the top prep girls basketball player in the state, tallied 25 points, 11 rebounds and four steals to lead Lake City to a 54-26 Inland Empire League win over Sandpoint Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.

Lake City (13-3, 7-2 IEL) dominated the second and fourth quarters, posting a commanding 28-7 edge over Sandpoint (6-9, 2-5 IEL) in those quarters. Timberwolves head coach Darren Taylor said his team's 2-3 zone was the difference in the defensive-minded game, where points came at a premium.

"The rotations were perfect all night," Taylor said. "It was hard for them (Sandpoint) to get a shot off."

Alissa Tenuto led Sandpoint with 12 points and Brittany Oakley added nine, as the Bulldogs committed a bunch of turnovers trying to penetrate Lake City's stingy defense.

"Sometimes you want it too bad," said Bulldogs coach Jim Alsager, noting his team showed nerves early on before settling down in the second half. "I got after them at half and they relaxed a little and played. We want to push the pace, but good teams make you make more passes."

Sandpoint is at Lakeland on Friday.

? Clark Fork girls fall to Wallace

CLARK FORK — Minus two of their top players, the Wampus Cats could not hang with a game Miners squad, as the Clark Fork girls fell 47-23 to Wallace Monday night in North Star League action in Clark Fork.

Bailey Hewitt missed the game with a broken wrist, and could possibly miss the rest of the season, and Megan Hess was still on vacation as the Cats (7-7, 3-3 NSL) struggled offensively. Brittany Drayton, another starter, has quit the team, leaving a big void to fill. Shaina Gustafson led the Cats with seven points and Mandy Martin added five.

"Shaina did a good job, the girls just weren't working very well tonight and Wallace played tough," said Cats coach Dexter Vogel, whose team committed a whopping 42 turnovers in defeat.

Brieanne Jennings led Wallace (2-11, 2-1 NSL) with a game-high 15 points.
