County won't be able to defend proposal

| January 9, 2008 8:00 PM

Below is a letter sent to our county commissioners. I am hoping others will follow.

Dear county commissioners:

I am disgusted that you are proposing a daily fine for people who choose not to disclose the sales cost of their homes. At what point will government finally get out of our lives? Where in the Constitution does it give you the right to fine us for keeping our financial matters private? I am sure there are enough people who do disclose their sale price that you can figure out some kind of tax for the rest of us. With the burst of the housing bubble, is this supposed to be some way to generate more revenue?

I am completely opposed to this ordinance. It violates our Fourth Amendment constitutional right to privacy, and besides, who do you know that has just sold a house, that would even be thinking about running out and reporting the sale price to their nearby police state within five days of the sale? They are too occupied with moving.

I think you will find this ordinance very difficult to defend in court.
