Teen is lucky to have 'world's meanest mom'

| January 9, 2008 8:00 PM

Meanest mom in the world? Or luckiest kid on the planet?

You be the judge.

A Fort Dodge, Iowa, mom had two rules for her son in regards to his new car — keep it locked and no alcohol — when she got it for the 19-year-old at Thanksgiving.

When she recently found a bottle of alcohol under the front seat, she promptly placed an ad in the local newspaper:

"OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

Jane Hambleton's believes her son's explanation that the alcohol was left by a passenger, but decided mercy wasn't the best policy and sold the car. The ad, which according to the Associated Press story, is continuing for a week and is drawing overwhelming support — from everyone except her son.

Hambleton stands by her decision, and so she should.

As the driver, she says her son knew the rules and made it clear to the unnamed passenger that there could be no alcohol in the car. Period.

Her son may not realize it now, but he's probably the luckiest kid around. His mom loves him enough to hold him accountable and to risk his unhappiness to help keep him safe.

Wouldn't it be great if more parents loved their kids that much?
