Sandpoint dispatches Vikings in wrestling dual
COEUR d' ALENE — Fresh off a strong fourth place showing at the 22-team River City Duals last weekend, Sandpoint continues to pick up steam, dispatching Lake City 69-9 in dual action Wednesday at Lake City High School.
Garret Belgarde (103 pounds), Colter Sigman (125), Chris Book (130), Sid Winter (135), Leonard Fister (152), Paul Marienau (171), Terry Taylor (215) and Austin Posey (Hvy) each recorded a pin to pace the Bulldogs.
Belgarde posted an impressive win, pinning Marcus Banducci, the No. 1 ranked 5A wrestler in Idaho. Book registered his first varsity win, replacing a sick Will Hughes at 130 pounds and igniting the Bulldogs.
"It was a real competitive match," said Sandpoint coach Kirk Hartzell of Book's win. "He battled and finally pulled a move that worked for him."
Sandpoint will wrestle Friday and Saturday in the Clearwater Classic at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston.

? Bulldog boys fall to No. 1 Vikings (late)
SANDPOINT — Defensive pressure and the red-hot shooting hand of Nate Clinton propelled No. 1 Coeur d'Alene to a convincing 73-54 win over Sandpoint Tuesday night in Inland Empire League action at Les Rogers Court.
The mercurial senior guard poured in a game-high 26 points, highlighted by six 3-pointers in the first half, including the final one at the first half buzzer that seemingly broke the spirit of a game Sandpoint squad. Clinton said his offensive approach was the same as always, noting the rim looked big.
"I try to go out in the flow of the game and take what they give me," he said of his hot first half. "I was trying to get the team started. We hope to start a 13 game win streak through state."
Andrew Prohaska had a solid all-around game for the Vikings (11-2, 5-0 IEL), scoring 11 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and four steals, and providing much of the defensive pressure that makes the Vikings click.
Sandpoint (5-8, 1-5 IEL) matched the Vikings intensity for much of the first half, tying the game at 21-21 before Clinton caught fire in the second quarter and put his team ahead for good.
"Clinton was the difference. They set high screens for him and he was hitting threes with hands in his face," said Bulldogs coach Lance Bruce, praising the Vikings' quickness. "They can really break you down with dribble penetration."
Spencer Swerin had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead Sandpoint, Tanner French added nine points and five assists, and David Duarte had a team-high eight rebounds in defeat. Bruce was pleased that his team went toe-to-toe with the No. 1 ranked 5A team in Idaho for much of the first half.
There was a scary moment in the first half, when Sandpoint guard Alex Crossingham caught a Viking player's elbow on his nose, dropping Crossingham to the floor for a brief time.

? Clark Fork boys fall to Priest River (late)
CLARK FORK — Clark Fork played well enough to win, but a spate of missed layups down the stretched proved costly in a 48-43 non-league loss to Priest River Tuesday night at Clark Fork High School.
Clark Fork (6-3) and Priest River (7-7) had split in their first two meetings this year, and it looked like the Cats might take the season series when they built an eight point lead late in the second quarter. But a turnover-filled third quarter, coupled with some easy misses late, proved too much to overcome.
"We had the ball, down one, and missed three layups," said Cats coach Brian Arthun, whose team had multiple chance to erase a one-point Priest River lead in the final minute. "If we scored on one of those, it's a different outcome. We need to finish games better."
Mike Martin had 15 points and eight rebounds, Jared Broggi added 11 points and seven boards, and Thomas McMahon tallied seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in the loss.
J.P. Ramsey had a game-high 16 to lead the Spartans, who took the tightly-contested season series over the two panhandle schools.
