Organization invaluable to local homeschoolers

| July 12, 2008 9:00 PM

When the oldest of my four children was ready, I began 'formal' homeschooling with him. Five years later, I still love the joys and challenges of teaching my children at home. But our family has always been on a limited budget and I felt there were some enrichment opportunities we just weren't able to provide.

Three years ago I discovered the Idaho Distance Education Academy (I-DEA). Partnering with I-DEA has given the best of both worlds of education: greater access to resources that broaden my children's experiences (such as piano lessons, online activities, and field trips); support and guidance; access to standardized testing; and our contact teacher, who cares about my children's education almost as much as I do.

At the same time, I maintain my freedom as the teacher, ultimately choosing how to teach my children individually according to their needs, at their own pace, and in our loving home.

Whether you are considering homeschooling for the first time or are a long-time veteran, I encourage you to check out -IDEA and all it has to offer. The academy can be found online, at www.idahoidea.org, or you can contact the North Idaho resource center, at 208-661-5099.
