Disband contractor board for not helping consumers

| July 19, 2008 9:00 PM

I have filed two complaints with the contractor's registration board; one for two spec home builders in Sandpoint who are not registered contractors. These two individuals pull permits as owner builders, a complete unlawful practice.

I provided the state with copies of these permits. Additionally, they do their own plumbing and electrical in the same manner. Also, they have installed septic systems as owner builders.

In the second complaint it was for a drywaller who did work on my house. The entire job needs redone. I provided pictures of drywall tape joints visible throughout my house; areas where they put no tape at all, areas where they failed to put any texture on at all, outlets and plumbing holes cut too large for cover plates or escutcheons to cover and drywall mud all over my windows.

Additionally, I provided estimates for other drywallers to repair the job. I also noted how I requested registration numbers from subs they had at my house - a right I am guaranteed under Idaho law. They refused this as the subs are obviously unregistered. Rather than repair the job at my house, the drywalls just file an unperfected lien on my house which I am now having to spend more money for legal fees to take care of.

In both cases, the contractors board has done nothing. I believe that if they are not going to take actions against individuals like this, the board should be abolished. They would not even visit my house to see the shoddy workmanship. The idea that the board is going to protect consumers is a joke. Apparently they just want to collect their fees and do nothing more.

It would be great to see a story on the inadequacies of the board.
