Group to attempt 'toughest' biathlon

| July 29, 2008 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — A small group of hearty souls are attempting to complete what is being billed as the "World's Toughest Biathlon" this Saturday in Sandpoint.

The group plans to participate in The Long Bridge Swim, a 1.76 mile open water swim across Lake Pend Oreille in the morning, then run/walk/crawl 15 more miles up to Schweitzer Village.

It's the brainchild of Bobby Powers, a 52 year-old who lives in Hawaii but has a house in Sandpoint. So what would possess someone to tackle such an arduous and grueling task?

"I've always wanted to do something harder than normal," said Powers, who also came up with the name. "This has to be the hardest biathlon."

He says the focus is mostly about having fun and ultimately finishing, and less on competition and times.

So far he's being joined by three others, but has hopes of making it an annual event, drawing more than 100 people. Room is still available for anyone brave enough to attempt the physical challenge. Cost is $20 (Long Bridge Swim fee is separate), and includes a T-shirt and brunch at Schweitzer Village, as well as ample bragging rights.

To sign up, contact Bobby Powers at (877) 534-0816.
