Helipics soars to new heights in aerial photography

SANDPOINT — There was a time, not long ago, when photographers were bound by certain restrictions. With technology improving on a seemingly daily basis, almost anything is possible in photography today.

Sandpoint’s Helipics is a perfect example of how photography has changed. The company, owned by Tara and Chip Olson, uses a remote controlled helicopter equipped with a camera to take low-altitude aerial photographs.

Shot from 150-300 feet in the air, the photos are perfect for land developments, real-estate, home construction, legal documents and marketing materials, Tara said.

With equipment that costs $15,000, skillful operation of the helicopter is a must, which is why Chip went to Texas for an intense eight-day training session. The training paid off, and Chip has kept the craft in one piece so far.

As a licensed pilot, Chip has a great understanding of the principles of flight, and as a professional photographer, Tara knows what angles will produce the best shot.

The Olsons hope Helipics can eventually become a full-time venture, but for now they are enjoying the time they’re spending together taking  photos.
