Dorothy Ladene Koucky

Dorothy 'Dene' Ladene Koucky was born on September 6, 1908. in Pueblo, Colo., to Leila James and William Hodges, and passed away at 99 years on May 21, 2008.

She was predeceased by her parents, her son, Joseph and her husband Rudolph.

Dene is survived by her daughters, Maggie (Victor) Johnson; Barbara Ramnaraine; daughter-in-law Judy (Don) Loe; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Her parents traveled and were constantly on the move so she spent her early years with relatives in Indiana. Charles and Josephine Frazee were her adopted parents who resided in Duluth, Minn.

Dene graduated from the University of Indiana in 1931 with a MD degree (she was the first female MD graduate at the University of Indiana). She did her internship at the University of Minnesota where she met and married Dr. Rudolph W. Koucky. They were married for 61 years.

Dene worked as a house doctor at Abbot Hospital during the Depression years. She and Rudolph retired to Sandpoint, Idaho. in 1969 where they gardened, fished, and traveled extensively.

Dene loved to play poker, bridge and bowl. African Violets were always her favorite flowers.
