SANDPOINT - In a seemingly abrupt move, Sandpoint City Councilman Steve Lockwood tendered his resignation to Mayor Gretchen Hellar on Monday.

Lockwood said the move comes as a result of his wanting to spend more time with his family.

Hellar, who announced the decision at a special session city council meeting on Thursday, praised Lockwood as a powerful voice in Sandpoint.

“I think Sandpoint has lost a real forward thinking, progressive person who was really committed to saving what was best about Sandpoint and celebrating this community,” Hellar said.

At the same meeting, Hellar announced the appointment John Reuter as Lockwood's replacement.

Reuter, 24, publisher of the Sandpoint Reader, still needs confirmation from the council before he officially takes over the position.

Hellar cited Reuter's deep knowledge of city issues a reason for his appointment.

“We needed someone who was really familiar with the comprehensive plan, and John fits that bill,” Hellar said.

Reuter said he is looking forward to working on the city's comprehensive plan and upcoming budget, but is quick to note that he has yet to be confirmed.

“I don't presume the council's support. That's a decision they will make on Wednesday,” Reuter said. “One of the exciting things about potentially being on this council is what an unpredictable group it can be from time to time.”

Reuter also expressed his admiration and appreciation for Lockwood's years of service on the council and said, if confirmed, he would continue to work on many of the issues that Lockwood championed.

Assuming his confirmation, Reuter would most likely step down as President of the Downtown Sandpoint Business Association and would hire a writer to cover city politics for the Reader.

The council will vote on the appointment at Wednesday's city council meeting.
