United States is a Christian nation

| June 16, 2008 9:00 PM

In 1781, America was free from Britain and its laws. One of those laws being that the colonies couldn't print Bibles in English.

This being the case, Congress approved the printing in 1782 of the 'Bible of the Revolution.' Congress endorsed it in the front saying, 'resolved that the U.S. in Congress assembled ' recommends this edition of the Bible to inhabitants of the U.S.'

Mr. Wiley (May 29) said that 'government-funded schools may not promote any particular regligious belief. 'Government ' therefore may not promote a particular religion' and 'government and religion must and do function separately.'

If this is the case, explain why the first English edition of the Bible in the U.S. was 'for use in our schools.' Explain why the first Congress and every subsequent Congress opened in prayer. Explain why the President swears with his hand on a Bible and says 'so help me God.' Explain why Bible verses are on nearly every monument in Washington, D.C. And, explain why our motto is 'In God we trust.' It can't be done.

I also disagree that I 'promote the opposite' by the quotes I gave that the government by the First Amendment was prohibiting a national church. The quotes have nothing to do with a compulsory national church.

I am out of room, so if you're not convinced, Google 'House Resolution 888,' read it and see for yourself. We are a Christian nation.
