Only SHS graduates qualify for celebration

| June 21, 2008 9:00 PM

Here's hoping the negative publicity surrounding Grad Nite does not jeopardize its future. As an involved volunteer I was disappointed to read the recent rash of opinion letters portraying SHS Grad Nite volunteers in a negative light.

It may be helpful to explain the stated purpose of Grad Nite. It originated as a way to lure graduates into a safe environment on a high risk evening of celebration when graduates are most likely to behave carelessly. To do so it must be held on the night of graduation. This is also a requirement to receive much needed grant money. SHS parents have done a great job creating a must-attend event. In all fairness to LPO students they deserve a Grad Nite celebration dedicated to them on their night of graduation.

Brought into question was the example we might be setting by excluding LPO students. With every choice we make in life there are consequences. By opting out of SHS they gave up the opportunity to participate in SHS Grad Nite. Teaching this lesson, however, was not the intent of Grad Nite organizers. They simply do not qualify because they did not graduate from Sandpoint High.

The responsibility of hosting a graduation night event for anyone other than SHS graduates should not be placed on the shoulders of SHS parents. Grad Nite requires and enormous amount of preparation and work by numerous volunteers with good intensions none of whom deserve this misguided criticism, but instead deserve kudos for their outstanding efforts.
