Joseph Clark Smith, 79

Joseph Clark Smith, 79, passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2008, in Sagle, Idaho. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joe was born on July 30, 1928, in Brewster, Wash., to William and Clara Smith. He grew up on a farm near Twisp. After his schooling he began logging. Joe married Lois Stallings on June 24, 1950. They made their home in Leavenworth and raised six children. The couple later divorced in 1985.

Joe moved to Cashmere, Wash., in 1986 where he worked as a welder and mechanic at the Cashmere Mill. In 2005 Joe moved to Garfield Bay on Lake Pend Oreille to be near his daughter.

He enjoyed bow hunting, fishing, rebuilding motors and welding garden ornaments in the shape of animals.

He is survived by four daughters, Janice (Neal) Brett of E. Wenatchee, Wash., Janet Harrington of Wenatchee, Wash., Julie Freed (Tom Derifield) of Sagle, Idaho, and Melissa (Larry) Nixion of Bothell, Wash.; a son, Rodney (Carmen) Smith of Killeen, Texas; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Dean Smith of Grangeville, Idaho; and three sisters, Glenda Mahaffey of Omak, Wash., Verleigh Schachtschnieder of Twisp, Wash., and Laverne Moyer of Bellingham, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Maria; four brothers, Gerald, Wade, Wiley, and Beryl Smith; a sister Marty Hough; and friend Gloria Cornell.
