Roos planning re-election bid

| March 1, 2008 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT - Former Bonner County Sheriff Evan “Chip” Roos is contemplating another run for office.

Roos has appointed a campaign treasurer for a possible re-election bid, according to county clerk's records. Roos, a Republican, was elected sheriff in 1988 and re-elected in 1992 and 1996.

He did not stand for election in 2000, the year former Sheriff Phil Jarvis won by a landslide. Jarvis did not seek re-election in 2004 and his undersheriff, Elaine Savage, went on to win the post in a fiercely contested race.

Savage, also a Republican, has not formally announced her re-election bid, but has indicated she intends to run. If she does, she could end up vying with Roos, Geoffrey Rusho and Rocky Jordan for the GOP nomination.

Candidates cannot file their declarations to seek office until March 10, although both Rusho and Jordan have appointed campaign treasurers.

In other election news, incumbent Democrat Commissioner Todd Crossett has also appointed a treasurer for his expected re-election try. He could face John Reuter, a Republican, in the general election for the District 1 spot.

Incumbent Republican Commissioner Joe Young, who represents District 2, also intends to run again. Republican Deputy Prosecutor Louis Marshall is running to succeed Prosecutor Phil Robinson, who is not seeking re-election.

The last day for all candidates - including independents - to declare their candidacy is March 21. Write-ins have until May 13 to declare their intentions.

Idaho's primary election is May 27 and the general election is Nov. 4.
