Fio, Rosholt in Big 12 Championships Saturday
EUGENE, Ore. - Former Sandpoint wrestler Luke Feist finished third at 174 pounds in the Pac-10 wrestling championships Monday night at McArthur Court, qualifying him for the NCAA tournament.
Feist won three state titles while wrestling under Mike Randles at Sandpoint, his lone loss coming in the state finals as a sophomore to his brother. His placing helped Stanford to a second place team finish, the highest Pac-10 finish in school history.
Former Bonners Ferry wrestler Adam Hall had a strong showing as well, finishing second in the 149 pound class, helping Boise State to an easy victory, claiming the Pac-10 tournament title with a team score of 152.5, 46 points more than second place Stanford.
Hall won two matches to earn a trip to the finals. Knowing he already secured a trip to the NCAA championships, he decided to forfeit to Cal State Fullerton's Morgan Atkinson to prepare for the national championships.
The Broncos will send nine wrestlers to the NCAA Wrestling Championships Mar. 20-22, in St. Louis, Mo.
Former Sandpoint wrestler Joey Fio, ranked No. 17 in the nation at 125 pounds for Oklahoma, will try and join the aforementioned local wrestlers at the NCAA tournament when the Big 12 championships take place this Saturday.
Fio, a freshman, scored a 3-2 decision recently over Oklahoma State's Tyler Shinn, ranked No. 14 at 125 pounds, to help lead the 17th ranked Sooners to an 18-15 win over the 3rd ranked Cowboys, marking the first time since 1995 the Sooners are the Bedlam Champs.
Cowboys' heavyweight Jared Rosholt, who wrestled at Sandpoint for two years, won 8-3 over his Sooner opponent at the same meet. Rosholt is ranked No. 8 in the nation at heavyweight, and will also try and secure a berth in the NCAA's for the Cowboys.
