Stone, Story lead Bulldog golf teams in season openers
CLARKSTON, Wash. - Leaving a trail of rust behind them as they hacked their way down the fairways at the par 72 Clarkston Country Club, the Sandpoint boys and girls teams opened their seasons Tuesday at the Clarkston Invitational, the first time all year either team has played outside on green grass.
The girls team shot a 406, led by Michelle Stone's 97 and Bonnie Snow's 99, en route to an 8th place finish. Head coach Jim Alsager said he was pleased with the first effort of the season, lauding the play of freshman Jessie Webster, who carded a 102 in her first-ever varsity match. However, since she was not part of the varsity five, her score could not count toward the final team score.
The boys team finished 20th overall with a team score of 410. Colton Story was the lone player to break 100, carding a 93 as the team struggled to find consistency with shots they've yet to practice. Head coach Mike Keough said the lack of practice makes it difficult for him to even evaluate his own team at this point.
“Right now we have a lot of distance learning to get used to,” said Keough, whose team is still weeks away from getting any real practice time.
The Bulldogs were without Dan Sommerfield, their top player, who is expected to play in their next match at Lewiston on Monday.
