n Lindsey Vonn gets downhill trophy; joins Bode Miller in quest to win World Cup overall titles

BORMIO, Italy (AP) - Lindsey Vonn picked up her World Cup downhill trophy on Wednesday, and joins Bode Miller in a quest to win the overall title this weekend.

Vonn, who clinched the downhill title last month, was awarded the downhill crystal globe after the men's and women's final downhill of the season was canceled because of soft snow on the Stelvio course.

Vonn is the first American woman to win the downhill trophy since Picabo Street in 1995 and '96.

Vonn and Miller are attempting the first U.S. sweep of the World Cup overall ski titles in 25 years.

Entering the World Cup finals, Vonn holds a 157-point lead ahead of Maria Riesch of Germany in the overall World Cup standings, and Miller has a 169-point edge on Didier Cuche of Switzerland heading into the final super-G, giant slalom and slalom of the season.

n Mariners 5, Brewers 1

PEORIA, Ariz. - Don't tell Arthur Rhodes this was a meaningless exhibition game.

Seattle's 38-year-old left-hander pitched a perfect inning in his first outing since last March - and said it felt like the World Series - as the Mariners beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 Wednesday.

The former Oakland closer, who had ligament replacement surgery on his pitching elbow last May, walked off the field to a rousing ovation from the crowd and his teammates after appearing in a game six weeks ahead of doctors' estimates. Rhodes stood in the grass in front of Seattle's dugout and responded with a pronounced bow and both arms extended above his head.

Carlos Silva, signed to a $48 million, four-year contract to be Seattle's No. 3 starter, allowed seven singles but no runs in five innings.

n McGrady, Rockets beat Hawks 83-75 for 20th straight win

ATLANTA (AP) - The Houston Rockets became the third team in NBA history to win 20 consecutive games and tied for the second-longest winning streak with an 83-75 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. The Rockets joined the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers (33 straight) and 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks (20) as the only teams to win 20 or more in a row.

BOSTON (AP) - With their longest winning streak in nearly 22 years, the Boston Celtics' confidence continues to grow as they eye their toughest road trip of the season.

Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen each scored 18 points to lift the Celtics to their season-high 10th straight victory, 111-82 over the Seattle SuperSonics on Wednesday night.

Kevin Durant scored 16 points for Seattle, which dropped its sixth straight and has lost 10 of 11.

“They went on a run and it was quick,” Durant said. “It got us off our guard.”
