| March 22, 2008 9:00 PM

Stacy Ira Carbart Sr., 91, passed away in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on March 21, 2008.

Stacy was born in Haziet, N.J., on Nov. 30, 1916. His wife, Dorothy Carhart, 90, passed away in October 2007.

Stacy lived in New Jersey until 1959. In New Jersey he worked at DuPont Film manufacturing to support his family.

He was a longstanding member of the Liberty Hose Volunteer Fire Department, earned a Third Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, and spent off time as an umpire for his boys' Little League games. Before leaving New Jersey he owned and operated Keyport Taxi Service. Moving to California in 1959 he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and lived in Los Angeles until 1970. Then he moved to Idaho where he worked on the family farm with his oldest son.

He settled in Rathdrum, Idaho, where he eventually retired and the family grew and prospered. His great legacy is his family of five living generations. Last summer his first great great grandchild was born in Sandpoint, Idaho.

He was survived by the eldest daughter, Marianne Leake of Hayden, Idaho; oldest son Stacy Carhart junior of Rathdrum; son James Carhart of Sagle, Idaho; and son Robert Carhart of Magalia, Calif.; 24 grandchildren, 44 great-grand children and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Stacy was a devout member of Immaculate Conception Church in Post Falls. He was loved by many both young and old for his gentle ways, his humor, his smile, and most of all for his music. He played and warmed the hearts of passengers on the Coeur d'Alene Lake Cruises with his four-string banjo playing and sing-alongs. He would pass out handwritten songbooks of old melodies from the 1940s so everyone could sing along at nursing homes, hospitals, church gatherings, and in living rooms surrounded by grandchildren.

He was a master gardener and his weedless vegetable garden behind his Rathdrum home was always picture perfect. He was generous and open-hearted man who delighted in each newborn child in the family and could tell you each one's name. We will miss him dearly. Special thanks to all the staff and caregivers at Life care Center from the Carhart family.
