| March 25, 2008 9:00 PM

Lustella Marian (Kilmer) Shields, 88, a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will remain in our hearts forever, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She was surrounded by all her children.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2008, at the Clark Fork United Methodist Church with Dr. Mark Wendle officiating; followed by a gathering in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow at the Clark Fork Cemetery.

She was born in Grass Lake, Mich., on Aug. 27, 1919, and resided in the Clark Fork Valley the majority of her life.

She graduated from Clark Fork High School in 1937, and married Carl Shields in 1938 in Thompson Falls, Mont., in a double ceremony with Harold Shields and Helen Erickson.

With her husband, Carl, she enjoyed raising their children, being with family, and caring for grandchildren. S

he was always busy cooking, sewing, gardening, canning, and doing for others.

Her pies and cookies were renowned.

She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In later years, she delighted in catching kokanee at Lake Koocanusa and being involved with the Clark Fork Methodist Church and their bazaars.

Of all her feats, hiking to Scotchman's Peak for her 70th birthday and snorkeling in Hawaii at 74 were high on the list.

But, to her family and friends, her capacity to endure the challenges of her declining physical health was the most admirable.

She is survived by her five children, Karen Guilfoyle and husband Michael, Sharon Brixen and husband Allen, Denny Shields, Becky Holt and husband Kevin, and John Shields and wife Shannon; 12 grandchildren, Debra, Dena, Diana, Suzanne, Allen Andrew, S. John, Sheri, Andrew, Joseph, Sarah, Joshua, and Johnathan; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leland Foster and wife Vieno; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Shields. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years; her parents, Walter and Ethel Foster; a sister, Laura Brockway; and a granddaughter, Dorie Hurt.

Memorial donations may be made to the Clark Fork Methodist Church or other charitable organizations.
