Not all meat in stores is humanely gathered

| March 26, 2008 9:00 PM

Having grown up in a house full of avid hunters I was able to educate myself at a young age concerning the difference between deer hide and mink. I believe Ms./Mr.? Curtis is unaware that something other than heifer hide has shown up on the kind people of Sandpoint, as well as other big cities across the bridge. There have been vast improvements in fabrics that are much warmer and keep you drier than dead animals. Fur has once again become simply a fashion statement, and I don't believe harvesting a game animal is the same as wearing a leopard skin coat.

Although I, like many other locals, learned to shoot before I learned to read, I've still managed to become aware that not all the meat in local supermarkets is humanely put to rest in our neighbor's barn yards by everybody's ‘compassionate' grandpa. As well as not all the fur lined trim we see is salvaged road kill, but may be shipped from China without regulations or proper labels. Where yes Sandy, cats, dogs and other of Gods creatures are skinned alive, electrocuted and strangled, whether we as consumers want to bother ourselves thinking about it or not.

That fuzzy lining, even if dyed blue, could have once meowed. We may want to believe we're wearing something that was willing to be sacrificed for our personal well being, but it's pretty difficult to maintain that all fur, or all meat is locally produced by big ole' grinnin' animal lovers.
