We can't afford not to support levy

| March 26, 2008 9:00 PM

There are many of us in this county who are excited about the upcoming facility levy on May 20. Through the years, we've often remarked on how much pride we see displayed in this community. It is truly an undiscovered pearl (actually becoming more “discovered” every day). It is not just because of its beauty and location, it is the people who live here and the interest they take in each other.

The pride we take in our neighborhoods, businesses, parks and streets is incomplete if we allow our schools to crumble. The first and most important question people ask when they move to an area is:  “How are the schools?”  Our schools are a reflection of what we believe in. It is said we put our time, resources and energy into the things that matter most to us. We should take a hard look at what it says when our schools are overcrowded, unsafe, leaking, unfinished. Our students, teachers and community deserve better.

Supporting great education has nothing to do with your age, political affiliation, financial worth or number of children. It is one of those basic altruisms. It is the mark of all truly great societies.

We are facing the prospect of a May 20 levy vote and we are thrilled. We can't afford not to support our schools. We can't afford not to vote “yes.”
