Community's support means world to Arlo's owners

SANDPOINT - For most restaurateurs, the experience of seeing your business in charred rubble would be demoralizing, but for Tom and Lisa Guscott, owners of Arlo's Ristorante, the fire that took their building also showed them how much love and support they have from the community.

In the time since the September fire, which gutted the building, the Guscotts have worked feverishly to restore and rebuild not only the tangible aspects, like the bar and the kitchen, but also the unique atmosphere and feeling that Arlo's has long been known for.

While the Guscotts have made considerable efforts to bring the restaurant back in its original form, some changes were needed to come up to date on building code.

Luckily for them - and their customers - the Guscotts said the changes are all improvements, like adding a new bathroom and completely overhauling the kitchen.

Like any successful business owners, the Guscotts were careful not to meddle with the ingredients that put them on the map, so don't expect any changes to the menu or staff and, as always, watch for the famous geese - Sweetie and Sinatra - on the deck.

The geese have made their home on the restaurant's deck for years, and the Guscotts said the two lovebirds have gained an extensive fan base in Sandpoint.

Although they would not wish their experience on anyone, they are convinced everything happens for a reason, and they ultimately view the fire as a blessing in disguise.

“People in this town have been so kind and thoughtful,” Tom said. “It has truly touched us when people walk up and tell us that (Arlo's) is part of Sandpoint.”

Located at 330 North First Ave., Arlo's is now open for lunch and dinner.
