SHS softball team drops two, headed to Boise

| March 27, 2008 9:00 PM

LEWISTON - It was a day head softball coach Derek Dickinson said he'd just as soon forget, as Sandpoint lost 20-4 to Colton, and 11-0 to Lakeland Wednesday at the Lewiston Invitational.

After looking surprisingly sharp in two close losses to Moscow last week, the Bulldogs (0-5) struggled defensively, committing 12 errors in the two games. Many of the errors are the kinds that most teams make the first couple weeks of practice, which the Bulldogs have not yet had.

“In pretty much every facet of the game we struggled today,” said Dickenson. “We had a hard time catching routine fly balls and the infield booted balls around.”

Molly Givens and Rachel Hammack each had three hits, and Heather Merwin added two as the Bulldogs were able to bang out 11 hits against Colton, but only two against Lakeland. Hammack struck out five Lakeland batters while going the distance in the second game.

They play at the Idaho Sporting Goods tournament in Boise this weekend, including games against Bishop Kelly, one of the top 4A teams in the state, and a host of 5A competition. This early in the season, Dickenson said he's keeping the message simple.

“We're going to have some fun and try to improve,” he said.
