Convicted stalker arrested again

SANDPOINT - A mentally ill Bonner County man on probation for stalking a Sandpoint woman for several years is back in jail for allegedly sending the woman e-mails and leaving her voice messages.

Nathan Lane Utt is charged with second-degree stalking.

Utt, 32, was jailed last May after being convicted of first-degree stalking. In that case, he was accused of barraging the woman with dozens of rambling, disjointed e-mails, some of which had menacing or sexual undertones, according to police reports. He also allegedly conducted surveillance on the woman and her family.

Utt pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 365 days in jail, court records show. Judge Barbara Buchanan suspended 335 days of the sentence, gave him credit for 18 days he had already served and ordered him to serve 12 more.

Utt was also placed on probation, a condition of which forbid him from having any form of contact with the 47-year-old woman or her family.

Utt, court documents said, suffers from schizophrenia and is hearing impaired. His attorney in the prior case said he stopped taking his medication during the stalking episodes.

The woman told Sandpoint Police Utt had been harassing her since 2005, after she worked with him as an interpreter in a court proceeding.
